James Houston Hawfield, 88
Apr 20, 2018Hawfield, who worked as a sales manager and underwriter at Government Employees Life Insurance Co. and Banner Life Insurance Co. from the 1950s to 1990, died March 18 at his home in Hagerstown, Md., after a long illness.Mr. Hawfield also was an Army veteran who served in the Korean War, rising up through the ranks post-war to chief warrant officer.After his retirement, he worked part time at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm and at the Landon School's athletic department.James Houston Hawfield was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Georgetown.He attended Western High School in D.C., St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Va., and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing sports of all kinds, and was a staunch supporter of UNC football and basketball, the Washington Redskins, the Washington Senators and the Washington Nationals.He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia W. "Pat" Hawfield; loving father of James H. Hawfield II (wife, Susan), Robert W. Hawfield (wife, Cindi) and Lee Zampella (husband, Alan); and devoted grandfather of Alice, Catherine, Will, James and Elizabeth.Family will receive friends at Pumphrey's Bethesda-Chevy Chase Funeral Home, 7557 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, Md., on Friday, April 6, 2018, from 7 to 9 p.m.A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Norwood Parish, 6701 Wisconsin Ave., Chevy Chase, MD 20815 on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 3 p.m.Private interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742 (www.hospiceofwc.org/donate); or DAV (Disabled American Veterans), PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301 (www.dav.org).
